Facebook is forming its own team to create its own chip designs.
The company is looking to hire people familiar in the matter, with a job listing on its website which particularly want managers who can “build and manage an end-to-end SoC/ASIC, firmware and driver development organization.”
An SoC (system-on-a-chip) is said to be a general concept in chip manufacturing and is commonly used to design chips found in mobile devices. An ASIC (application-specific integrated circuit) refers to a more customized chip, which is develop for special purposes.
Facebook will join other tech titans such as Apple and Google, that have taken major steps to design and develop their own chips.
The social media company is likely to incorporate its chips in various devices, including artificial intelligence software found in its data centers. With the launch its own engineered chips, Facebook is able to improve future range of its own devices such as ‘Oculus Go’ and its smart speakers, which will be released pretty soon.
Facebook AI researcher Yann LeCun has tweeted out a few chip-related postings on Wednesday to those who are interested.
