In fact, a 2017 LinkedIn report found 55 percent of companies expect a substantial increase in hiring. Even though hiring managers are on the hunt for fresh talent, it’s often challenging to find a job that perfectly aligns with clients’ career ambitions.
However, with strong determination and these tips, your clients will be on their way to landing their dream job in no time:
1. Encourage them to take a job outside of their comfort zone.
At some point, most job seekers are faced with accepting a job offer that is not exactly what they had hoped for. With bills hanging over their heads, they may have to accept an offer that helps them make ends meet, even if the position isn’t a perfect match.
Although this job may not be their top pick, it could be an opportunity to get their foot in the door and gain valuable experience that could lead to their ideal dream job. Encourage them to use these job opportunities to soak up as much experience as possible and gain valuable practical skills to carry throughout the rest of their career.
Let’s say they want a job in hospitality and hotel management but ended up accepting a job managing a local restaurant.
Don’t let them look at this as a step back. Instead, show them it’s an opportunity to develop their management and marketing skills. In fact, you may end up finding opportunities for them to plan special events at the restaurant, helping build their portfolio for future event planner jobs.

2. Enhance their resume with certifications.
No matter how long your clients have been out of the classroom, there are always opportunities to specialize in certain areas of their career and develop new skills.
For example, those who majored in marketing could find it helpful to get a certification in project management and take on bigger assignments. Not only does this certification provide them a new skill, it also beefs up their resume and will help them stand out from other candidates.
Of course, you don’t want to suggest they spend a lot of money to expand their skill set. And you don’t have to. In fact, websites like Lynda.com, Udemy, Udacity and Hootesuite offer free or low-cost courses to develop skills and grow certification lists.
3. Find volunteer opportunities they’ll love.
Many clients are looking for new careers because current ones aren’t fulfilling their passions. Help them discover where their passions lie by finding an organization where they can volunteer their time and talent.
Not only is this a great way to help them feel fulfilled, it also gives them the opportunity to gain valuable soft skills to enhance their resumes.
For example, they have landed a copywriter job, hoping it would be a great fit because they’re a passionate writer. Yet, they have a desire to learn graphic design and, unfortunately, their current role doesn’t offer opportunities to develop that skill.
Find a nonprofit that aligns with their values and see if they can volunteer to design graphics for social media accounts. This allows them to incorporate current copywriting skills while getting their feet wet in graphic design.

4. Ramp up their networking.
As a career coach, you understand the power of networking.
Help clients get started by asking them to make a list of companies they’d love to work for. Identify employees in roles that are similar to ones they desire. Once you have a list of professional contacts, have clients to reach out via email or LinkedIn and ask if connections would meet for 30 minutes over coffee.
Also, encourage them to tap into their alumni networks to connect with graduates who are already working in their field.
