Taco Bell Brings Back Tacos With Crispy Fried Chicken ‘Shells’

This week, Taco Bell was officially named America’s favorite “Mexican restaurant.” Evidently, the chain isn’t the most authentic one out there, and its newest addition seems to perpetuate this irony.

The brand has brought back the ‘Naked Chicken Chalupa’, a fan favorite from 2017 that features a fried chicken “shell.” This time, though, it’s also spiced things up and has launched another variation, ‘Wilder Naked Chicken Chalupa’.

The idea of substituting a taco’s carb might already alarm purists, so what makes this one even “wilder?”

“The original ‘Naked Chicken Chalupa’ is spicy in its own right with an all-white meat, raised without antibiotics crispy chicken shell,” the brand explained. “[It’s] kicked up with bold Mexican spices and seasoning and packed with shredded lettuce, tomatoes, cheddar cheese and creamy avocado ranch sauce.”

The ‘Wilder’ version simply comes with a new, smoky ‘Wild’ sauce to bring up even more heat.

Those who like piling on the cheese might prefer the chain’s ‘Nacho Cheese Naked Chicken Chalupa’, which, as its name suggests, promises the same goodness but with warm, gooey nacho cheese. This item is only available in Cleveland for a test period, unfortunately.

Starting 10 May, all three variations will go at US$2.99 a pop, and can also be ordered in US$5 boxes that come with a Doritos ‘Locos Taco’, a crunchy taco, and a medium-sized drink.
