Andy Spade, husband of the late fashion designer Kate Spade, has broken his silence for the first time since her death on Tuesday. The BBC has reported that Kate’s passing has been ruled as suicide by the medical examiner.
Fans and celebrities worldwide were devastated to learn about her sudden departure, and her family has paid tribute, including her brother-in-law David Spade.
According to Andy, Kate had been battling with depression and anxiety for years. Kate was seeking help and working with doctors to overcome the illnesses.
Andy shared that when he had spoken to her the night before her death, she “sounded happy.” The news came as a complete shock as there were no hints that Kate would take her own life.
Despite having to battle “personal demons,” Andy clarified that “it clearly wasn’t her.” Andy and Kate had been living apart for some time and her death has left both he and daughter Bea heartbroken.
In an interview with The New York Times, Andy revealed that despite living separately, they still saw and spoke to each other everyday. Though they were not legally separated, they still loved each other and never discussed about divorce.
He also praised Kate, describing her as “the most beautiful woman” and kindest person, as well as his best friend for 35 years.
