For the past 30 years, Europe’s largest Keith Haring mural in a public space has been hidden beneath weatherboarding aluminum plates.

The 1986 artwork, which was created on the former depot of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, measures 12m by 15m and features a human character plus what seems to be a “sea monster” in Haring’s iconic style.

Over the last four years, graffiti artist Aileen Middel, also known as Mick la Rock, has worked to bring this creative piece back into the light.

Together with the Director of the Keith Haring Foundation Julia Gruen and Vroom & Varossieau’s Olivier Varossieau, Middel negotiated with real estate developers under the ‘Save Our Haring’ initiative to uncover and restore the mural.

On 18 June, the Keith Haring mural in Amsterdam saw the first light of day after nearly three decades. The Stedelijk Museum, Keith Haring Foundation, Municipality of Amsterdam and project developers of Marktkwartier West are now collaborating to decide how to best preserve the mural.

According to Wide Walls, the artwork is currently not open to public but can be seen from Willem de Zwijgerlaan street in Amsterdam West.

Very special moment this morning: the Amsterdam KEITH HARING mural sees daylight (and rain) after being hidden for 30 years. We were there to witness and celebrate this together with @vroomandvarossieau @stedelijkmuseum @jasperkrabbe @ballastnedam @volkerwesselsinbeeld @keithharingfoundation @gemeenteamsterdam and the famous restorers Will Shank and Antonio Rava. #veryspecialmoment #keithharing #dreamcomestrue #amsterdamkeithharing #saveourharing #urbancontemporaryart #graffitiart #mural #1986

It took 2 full days to take off the cladding but -wow- here it is: our Amsterdam Keith Haring (1986). The paint is in delicate state and needs restoration. The building, too. Let’s hope for the best as this project goes along! To all parties involved: THANK YOU! 🤝. #keithharing #keithharingmural #amsterdamkeithharing #mural #1986 #marktkwartier #foodcenteramsterdam #graffitiart #urbancontemporaryart #streetart

28 years after artist's death, Amsterdam just became a city with the largest #KeithHaring public mural in Europe! After some 30 years of being covered with isolation panels, the mural he painted back in 86 finally resurfaced last week thanks to a determined group of people that included @micklarock01, @stedelijkmuseum, @keithharingfoundation & @vroomandvarossieau.
