While Donald Trump’s UK visit was nothing short of eventful, the US President’s subsequent stopover in Helsinki, Finland to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin has become a highlight in itself.

In spite of proof from US intelligence agencies that Russia had in fact interfered in the 2016 election, Trump declared otherwise during a press conference that followed the meeting. His explanation went along the lines of: Putin and his nation were not in on it because the Russian president said so.

“My people came to me… they said they think it’s Russia—I have President Putin; he just said it’s not Russia,” Trump announced. “I will say this: I don’t see any reason why it would be.”

Trump’s statement was hit with heavy criticism, even from his allies, with one internet joke going viral for proficiently capturing the gist of the claim.

Shared by Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn on Twitter, the meme shows ‘Captain America’—who evidently represents the US President—with the caption, “I spoke to ‘Thanos’. He didn’t do it.”

For the uninitiated, villain ‘Thanos’ deliberately wiped out half of the world’s population with a snap of his fingers in Avengers: Infinity War. It wasn’t a suspicion formed by the surviving ‘Avengers’; he truly pulled the act, and even if he told anyone it wasn’t his doing, it wouldn’t negate the fact that he literally had a hand in it.

Following the backlash, Trump has since retracted his words by attributing them to a grammar error. He responded, “I said the word, ‘would,’ instead of ‘wouldn’t…’ [I meant] ‘I don’t see any reason why I wouldn’t,’ or, ‘why it wouldn’t be Russia.’ Sort of a double negative.”
