Everyone has secrets, and owners of Mac computers are no exception. Often there are situations when it is vital to hide certain folders and files from prying eyes. Fortunately, the macOS desktop operating system has all the features for this. Today we will touch upon this topic in more detail, and analyze step by step what is needed for that.

Unlike the Windows operating system, macOS does not allow you to hide a file or folder with one click. Moreover, in the Finder, in principle, there is no option to hide files. However, this problem is solved quite simply – you just need to refer to the macOS multi-function command line.

So, how to hide a folder or file in macOS?

  • First of all, you should launch the Terminal application in any convenient way. The easiest way to do this is through Spotlight.
  • In the command prompt window, type the following command: chflags hidden, and without pressing Enter, add a space.
  • Now you need to select a folder or file to hide from others. Select and transfer to the command window. Confirm our intentions with the Enter button.

All is ready. The desired file or folder will no longer appear in the Finder.

It is necessary to take into account that hidden documents can still be found through Spotlight. To avoid this, you need to add an exception in the search settings:

  • Go to the “System Settings” – “Spotlight”
  • Go to the tab “Privacy”, add folders with hidden content.

How to make a file or folder visible?

  • Re-launch the Terminal application.
  • Turn on the display of hidden files for this instruction.
  • After that, enter the following command in the command window:  chflags nohiddenand add a space.
  • Find your hidden file or folder through the Finder and transfer it to the Terminal window. We confirm our choice.
