Lucasfilm’s very own immersive entertainment division, ILMxLAB, has announced a brand new Star Wars series–one that will be released on the Oculus Quest (a new VR gaming console due out early next year). Not only that, but also it’s being worked on by Ninja Theory, the developers responsible for Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice.
Starring the Star Wars franchise’s iconic Darth Vader, the series is titled Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series, and over the course of three episodes will allow players to get a closer, more in-depth look at the science fiction IP’s most popular villain. The trailer doesn’t show off a whole lot, but it does clarify that players won’t be taking control of Vader himself and will instead be interacting with him and his castle home on the planet Mustafar. What’s more, it’s been confirmed that the series takes place between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, and is considered canon.
Mohen Leo, director of immersive content at ILMxLAB, explained that conversations about the project began three years ago, around the same time as ILMxLAB’s founding. Writer and executive producer David S. Goyer (Blade, Batman Begins) will be working on the project as well, stating, “The idea that I could actually work with ILMxLAB and do something with Vader, that was the killer app for me.”
Though ILMxLAB have stressed that the title isn’t a video game and is actually a “VR story series,” this could very well get whet the appetites of fans of the Star Wars games, since that area has very little going for it at the moment. Star Wars: Battlefront 2 seems to no longer be at the forefront of peoples’ minds–save for the loot box controversy it suffered–and there is still virtually no info about Respawn’s title, Jedi: Fallen Order.
Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series is expected to release alongside the Oculus Quest in spring 2019.
