If there’s anything Blizzard should be known for, it’s their ability to support communities with established properties, laying a foundation on strong launches before offering expansions packed with content for years to come. It shows with titles such as World of Warcraft and Diablo, games that have been around for years now, yet still attract large audiences to make them both popular and profitable. With , the newest property coming out of Blizzard in over a decade, their upcoming shows signs of this same support, with hopes of keeping the relevant for years to come.

According to Kotaku, Blizzard has announced the next update for Overwatch will require players to the entire game in order for it to go into effect. The update is said to improve a number of interior workings, such as faster loading times, bug fixes, and changes to the data format to support the game for future content. In the case of PlayStation 4 users, specifically, the update will reduce the hard drive space needed in order to play the game, which already less memory space than most titles. At this time, there is no release date for the update to go into effect.

Since launching back in May 2016, Overwatch has continued to see support with seasonal events, as well as adding a number of new characters since launch, such as Ana, Sombra, Orisa, Doomfist, Moira, Brigitte, and Wrecking Ball. Their newest character, Ashe, was announced during BlizzCon last weekend as the game’s 29th hero. There’s no confirmation yet if she’ll be added into the roster in this update.

Overwatch has earned the right to receive the support it has from both Blizzard and the community. Back in 2016, Overwatch won Game of the Year at The Game Awards, while also earning the same title during the 2017 DICE Awards a few months later. When combining the extended plans to add content regularly to the game and the current generation of home consoles nearing the end of their life cycle, Blizzard is doing their best to keep their popular hero shooter up to date, while also preparing for external changes such as newer consoles and the potential for universal cross-play with other systems.

Overwatch is available now for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
